April 26 - Catch of the Week - 17" Cutthroat Trout
In places like Pemberton and Squamish spring has finally sprung! There are flowers pushing up all around, and we are just starting to see the first signs of leaves on the cottonwoods and alders that line the rivers. With this we are also seeing a fry emergence, and greater fish activity. Patterns like rolled muddlers and fry flies are what’s on the menu now. Cutthroat, Rainbows and Dollies all feed on salmon fry and par throughout the spring, as long as river clarity is good, fishing should also be good.
Steelhead and Chinook Salmon are also showing up locally, though not as many in previous years. These fish are hard to find in our rivers, but are the ultimate goal for many us. The rule of thumb for flies is usually small and dark when rivers are clear and big and bright when the visibility starts to decrease. The best fly in many cases here is the one you have on your line at the time!
