Catch of the Week: 19" Dolly Varden
Conditions in Whistler couldn't be better for fishing right now. We are currently fishing local lakes for Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout with an average size between 10" and 14". Some days are producing double digit numbers! Dry flies like mosquito's and elk hair caddis patterns are working best on the surface, while leach's and halfback nymphs have be proven producers when the fish are feeding down below.
Lakes that have glacial creeks feeding them have been best with all our hot weather. The other lakes that do not have this cool influence of fresh water are getting a too warm for active fish. Green and Nita Lakes are two good examples of cold water and good fishing around the creek mouths.
River fishing will slowly be coming into shape as the month progresses. We still have a lot of snow in the alpine and rivers will be high until it melts. Even with high water there are chances for Dollies and Rainbows locally if the conditions are right. We should have more opportunities to fish our local rivers by the end of July if the temperatures stay hot and suns stays out.
Lastly, the fly out option to Spruce Lake has been popular this summer. Fishing has been fantastic with 20 to 30 fish per person not uncommon. If it fits your schedule this is a trip of a lifetime!
